 Why would a servant of God go to satan’s agents for power to do God’s work?

Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.” “There is one in Endor,” they said….. So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.” ….. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!” …… Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.” 1 Sam 28:7-8,12,15

One of the pastors that submit to me in ministry confessed that he had taken steps last year to get spiritual powers from strange sources last year. According to him, he had started with all the processes but at one point he changed his mind. He knew it was wrong but he went all the same.

Another pastor friend confessed he had gone to the “School of Prophets” to be taught how to “Prophesy” and see visions for people. Like the former, he too backed out because a friend of his called over the phone from a faraway city warning him to refrain from whatever he was up to. He stopped because he knew that it was God that had warned him through that pastor. He knew it was wrong but he went all the same.

Yet another one who was my neighbor has some weird stories following him now. He had invited one of the popular “Prophets” who visit Nigeria from Ghana. After the Prophet from Ghana left, the daughter of my friend died under very strange circumstances. Within two weeks of his daughter’s death, my friend with which I share common fence began to “SEE”. He began to call people’s phone numbers and other details of their lives. He announced over the speaker, “I can now see!” His messages changed from bible scriptures to other things. He began to ask people to sow their cars and properties as seed to him. The denomination he belonged could not take it anymore and so threw him out.

 In the city I live I observed how a prominent evangelical church invited the “mentor” of my neighbor to their meeting; I mean the one that “opened” his eyes. I knew because they posted the poster on Facebook. I was shocked because the Ach-bishop in charge of this denomination is an international recognized servant of God who has spent a good portion of his life defending the truth. How could he descend so low?  He knows it is not the right spirit but……

All these people I mentioned have one thing in common, they want to have spiritual powers. They want to be able to see into the spirit realm and tell worshipers their problems. They want to prophesy. They want to meet the need of their congregation. The reason for this is because it has become the reigning thing in this age to tell people the details of their lives in the name of prophecy.

The first pastor I mentioned has been my friend for years and has witnessed me ministering several times. I offered to preach in his church for seven days, and he accepted. I was in that meeting with other pastors who currently work with me. I don’t really know what I want to achieve but I feel it is necessary to let these men watch me again. In that program there were very clear manifestations of the gift of prophecy through the Holy Spirit; total strangers heard the Lord call them out and tell them about deep secrets of their lives. I don’t know whether my host learnt the lesson I was trying to pass across.

 Why would a servant of God go to satan’s agents for power to do God’s work?

Like most problems that believers face, when it is discussed we handle them so that victims of such are not bold enough to open up; sins like adultery, fornication, homosexuality and lesbianism. People under such pressure don’t want to speak up because of fear of how they will be regarded. But the plain truth is that those who commit these sins are in our midst. We cannot help them unless we allow them to come forward without fear of stigmatization. It is even strange that victims of rape and other forms of sexual harassment are treated as if they deliberately allowed whoever abused them to do so. I don’t want to mention AIDS sufferers.

What I mean is that my reason for raising these issues about pastors and ministers of the gospel going to seek power from satan is not to point out how bad it is. Yes, we all know it is bad and detestable. I don’t believe that any believer who later gave himself to be a minister of the gospel planned that one day he will be sitting in front of a shrine or occult altar to seek power.

At least Saul, the first king of Israel did not plan to do so. From our text it is obvious that he got there out of frustration. He had done all that he knew to get information and guidance from God. He was at a point he could not defer his search; his enemies were right in front of him, their army are mustered and there is this deep seethed fear in his soul that has drained all confidence from him. It was a horrible thing for a king that has fought and won every other war to find himself in such situation.

Saul was desperate and he needed to connect to the only God he knew and worshiped. If he had a pastor or prophet this was the time to get to him. But his prophet and pastor was dead. So he had to get to the prophet at whatever cost.

How? Perhaps, you can now see why he threw open the question. As I have always said, satan and his agents always plant somebody in your life and the church to lead you into the kingdom of darkness. You may have been deceived to be believe he shares your faith and religion, but when the time comes he will manifest.

Pro-active efforts needed

Like never before are the words of Jesus more true than this – The Harvest is plentiful but laborers are few.

The more serious problem is that if we do nothing the labors of others maybe in vain. I am calling for help from all believers so that on-the-ground-force can come into place and join in the battle. It is normal that after air bombardment by the air force that the army will move in with land force. The TV ministries have done the bombardment, it is now time for on the ground force to move in with training and discipleship programs. The kind of thing I see here is that if we take advantage of this season, more and more souls will be established in the Kingdom

Five steps we can take

1.      We must see this as urgent need. All hands must be on deck. Haven read thus far, some people will simply shrug and continue what they were doing, others will see it as wonderful write-up and do nothing about it. But our prayer is that this will give any genuine child of God sleepless night. Our prayer is that somebody will call and demand more information as to what can be done.

2.      We need partnership with Christian organizations and individuals who have faced this kind of challenges in other continents and have what it takes to handle them. We need travel ministers who have skills in handling such situations. Sorry to say that some travel ministers from America and Europe will do much good if they stay back and send us the money.  This is no time for sightseeing trips.

3.      Aggressive enlightenment through Radio, TV, tracts and other Christian literature. I invite those who have audio messages and teachings which we can publish on air to send them. Some Christian organizations make the mistake of airing their teaching only through Christian Radio and TV stations. I call it mistake because they fail to understand that most Christian Radio Stations are only listened to by members of that organization. We need to reach out across to everybody else

4.      We need crusade equipment to go open air. For more than fifteen years now PNUR have not organized crusade. We have begun to see the need to ignore the churches and their leaders and to move out to open places. We need projectors, Electricity generating plants,  drum sets, Amplifiers and every other thing that make up crusade equipment

5.      We need purposeful Spirit driven intercession in this regard

 Satan and his agents take advantage of the situation –

So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and when they were scattered they became food for all wild animals. My sheep wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. They were scattered over the whole earth, and no one searched or looked for them Ezek. 34:5-6

No scripture described in a better dramatic picture the present state of many new converts across Africa. Churches are springing up in every nook and cranny with no message of relevance for seekers of Christ. These new converts do not have any background knowledge of the bible. Some of them came from idol worshiping background. They are very sincere and eager to serve the God they have so soon discovered. Occult men, Voodoo priests, witchdoctors and Indian magicians who parade themselves as pastors lurk on them and draw them into their net.

Gory tales abound of what happen to people who visit some churches. I was in one such church in Douala, Cameroon and observed them using something I thought was the normal olive oil. I was soon to learn that some Hausa juju priests sell them. Some buy from mystic shops and there are those who visit shrines hidden in the jungle to get theirs. These satanic potions aided the “prophet” to get manifestations and assistance of the evil spirits they work with.

It is needful to point out that there are young men who sense the call of God in their lives and sincerely want to be used by God the way he sees on TV but do not know how to get the spiritual powers they desire. Some of them visit people they believe have been in ministry for a longer time for help. These innocent but ignorant servants of God are initiated into Satanism by the false prophets. So in an average prophetic church in Africa you will observe on the pastor’s table and/or on the altar different kinds of labeled bottles of oil. It is not the question of why they should sell the vehicle of God’s power but that these different kinds of oil are actually gotten from satan. They have power in some cases to place whomever it touches under spell to do whatever the prophet demands. Responsible family women have been heard having sex with “street dog” called a prophet; young men have been heard get into homosexual practices with some prophets; we have heard of people who handed over their car keys and emptied their bank account because the prophet asked them to. Marriages get broken and destinies get corrupted.

Why does this concern us?

When people go through these kind of things and manage to escape they swear never to enter a church again. Remember that I mentioned earlier that some so-called missionaries from Nigeria are involved in these evil practices. So it implies that the hearts of the people are closed against the very people that God sent to help them. In many of the churches I ministered in Africa it takes days to make the people open their hearts because of past experiences.

These contribute to great degree the reason we have not been able to have our conferences in some cities. In some places they are doubtful of our sincerity. In other places the agents of satan have gotten a stronghold like the case of Apostle Paul and Bar-Jesus (Acts 13:6-9. They do everything to see that the people will not see the light of the true gospel.

 Genuine servants are getting frustrated out of the Kingdom work.

(Why you must support PNUR Conference in African countries)

The influence of Nigerian churches on the African continent and the world over cannot be overestimated. In my travel around African countries I observed many families sitting glued to their TV sets on Sundays and every other week day watching Nigerian TV Evangelists. In fact, it makes ministering to them much easier as they see you as a brother to those they see on TV. Like in the case I met in Yaoundé when one of my partners whom I call simply OC took me to pray with a woman who was having problem walking. In a matter of seconds the woman walked out of her home when I asked her to step out in faith. I was uncomfortable when she did not return within ten minutes because I did not understand the miracle God has wrought on her. It was then her husband explained to me that it was a miracle she was able to walk down the staircase and did not collapse. Such was the many miracles I witnessed in my ministry not because of my faith but because my country men had built faith into the people I met through cable and TV programs. Some had begged me to lead them to Christ and yet others asked me to pray that they be filled with the Holy Spirit. And sure as it was, there was instant testimony because their hearts were made ready. There are those whose main life ambition is to pay pilgrimage to Nigeria. So that they too can be part of those large meetings and have people watch them on TV in a place of prayer.

Wonderful as these testimonies are, there are also some serious problems they create.

1. People give their life to Christ without proper follow-up and sound bible teaching. I know a woman whose relation got healed in her house while watching a TV program of a Nigerian preacher. The woman had been booked for operation only a day before then; she had made payment and moved her things to the hospital, only waiting for day break to move to the hospital. But the evening of the day before she discovered that the tumor for which she was to be operated had disappeared while she joined in prayer with a TV Evangelist. She shared the testimony with me. Many more like that receive miracles and give their life to Christ but there is no present worker to build them up in their new faith. A great number are not able to stand and they fall away. A secondary school young man I met did not know where to find the book of Revelation though he is a church worker. Churches spring up because somebody encountered the Holy Spirit and as a result manifest spiritual gifts. In such congregations you find people worshiping the God they do not know.

I am sorry to say this but many so-called missionaries I meet on my trips are wounded soldiers and many more others, wolves in sheepskins. They are more of obstacles to the gospel than help to the Kingdom agenda. When you talk about organizing programs that will strengthen the Body of Christ, not many of them understand what you imply.

It’s also shocking to note that an average Roman Catholic member knew more scripture and Christian character than most Pentecostal members I met in Cameroon. You are likely to observe that seven out of ten pastors, even those of established churches, are living with women they had not properly married.

In Bamenda, Cameroon, the retreat places Pentecostal pastors and their members use for prayers are generally owned by the Roman Catholic Church. In such places one should not be surprised to see the crucifix on every bed. My surprise though is that most of those Pentecostal ministers do not know the difference between the Roman Catholic crucifix and the evangelical cross.

This state of chaos means that many new converts soon get confused and stop following the Lord
